A wet leather strap is a small daily drama: the forgotten shower, the sudden rain, summer sweat. The difference between a strap that recovers and one that becomes stiff or stained lies in what you do in the first 10 minutes. Let me explain how to dry it properly — and what NOT to do.
What to do in the first minutes, if the strap gets wet?
As soon as you notice it is wet, take a clean cotton or microfibre cloth and blot. Do not rub. Press lightly to absorb the water from the surface. Repeat until the cloth comes away only slightly damp. Important: no paper towels (they leave microfibres) and no toilet paper (it sticks to wet leather).
Should it be removed from the watch to dry?
Remove the strap from the watch as soon as you can: the moisture beneath the lugs does not evaporate well and can corrode the spring bar over time. Open the strap fully (loosen everything) to expose more surface to the air. If the buckle is wet, dry it separately.
How long does a leather strap take to dry?
Lay the strap flat on a dry cloth, in a ventilated environment at room temperature. Never on the radiator, never in direct sunlight, never with a hairdryer — heat dries the fibres too quickly and creates cracks within the following 2-3 months. The leather must dry at its own pace.
The time varies according to how wet it was: light rain 4 hours, sweat 6 hours, full immersion 8-12 hours. Check by touch: the strap should not be cold or sticky before reassembling it.
How do you know if water has left a mark?
Once dry, check two things: shape (is the strap still straight, not wavy? does the buckle still hold?) and colour (any darker halos or white marks from the salt of perspiration). If the shape is wavy, flatten the strap under a heavy book for 4-6 hours.
After drying, is balm needed?
After a significant soaking (shower, immersion, heavy rain), nourish the leather with a specific balm: the hide has lost oils during evaporation. Half a fingernail of balm, apply with your fingertip, let it absorb for 30 minutes, polish with a soft cloth. For precious leathers (alligator, cordovan), use only dedicated balm — no generic products.
What ruins a wet strap beyond repair?
- No hairdryer — heat dries the fibre from within and creates permanent micro-cracks
- No radiator or direct sunlight — same problem, slow but irreversible
- No paper or aggressive absorbent materials — they strip the finish
- No alcohol or acetone to remove stains — they dissolve the tannage and alter the colour
- No refitting on the watch before complete drying — moisture remains trapped and causes mould within the following 2-3 months
A wet leather strap is not a tragedy: with these 5 steps and a few hours of patience, it returns as before. If a halo remains or if the strap has become stiff after a significant soaking, bring it to the atelier: in many cases we recover it with a relining treatment of the hide.
