Calf 21mm — Rolex Daytona and Day-Date

21mm: the lug width most straps don't actually get right

The 21mm lug width isn't random. It's the measurement Rolex chose for the Day-Date and some of the older Daytona references, back when the watch needed to sit centered on the wrist and the case shouldn't look oversized against the bracelet. A strap cut to 20mm on a 21mm lug leaves visible gaps at the sides; one cut too wide forces the spring bar and stresses the leather at its weakest point, right where the buckle hole sits. That's why we cut the exact size, not an approximation.

The calf we use has a tight grain but stays supple: it bends without cracking, and as you wear it, it molds to your wrist instead of staying flat. For the first two or three months the leather is still "young," slightly lighter in tone; then the patina starts building—not a flaw, but a record of actual wear. The color shifts where your wrist touches it most, near the buckle, while the side facing the dial stays more even.

Custom construction means this too: the buckle hole isn't standard issue, but calculated for your wrist, so the strap works in the right spot along its length and not at the ends, where leather wears faster. You won't see this detail for a few years, but it's what determines whether a strap lasts or eventually splits.

Frequently asked questions

Which watches with a 21mm lug width are compatible with a calfskin strap?

Rolex Day-Date 116689, Rolex Day-Date 116688, Rolex Daytona 116681 and 116680, Submariner 126619LB. 21mm refers to the lug width — the opening where the spring bar passes through. Always check before ordering.

Why choose calfskin for a 21mm watch?

Why 21mm is the size for luxury sports Rolex models. Saffiano calfskin is sturdy, compact, doesn't bend. It stands up to men on the move, keeps its shape. It's the leather for those who want rigour, not delicacy.

How do you measure a 21mm lug width?

Measure the spring bar gap between the two lugs of the watch. You'll need callipers or a flexible tape measure. If you're unsure, bring the watch to the atelier: we'll check together at no cost, then you can decide on the strap.

How much does a 21mm calfskin strap cost?

From €80. The price varies depending on customisations — extra colour, specific buckles, finishing.

Is it possible to order a 21mm calfskin strap made to measure in the atelier?

Casati Milano receives by appointment at Via XX Settembre 15, Milan. The leather is chosen together — the strap is created on the watch, not before.
