Handmade in Italy Selected leathers

For almost two centuries, the Maisons of Place Vendôme have chosen this leather without ever naming it. Not because it's a secret – but because certain materials speak for themselves, to those who know how to listen.

Grand Cavalier Cuir calfskin comes from Conceria Haas, in the French countryside, since 1842. Pure vegetable tanning: no surface treatment, no varnish, no chemical shortcuts. Only bark, time, and artisanal mastery passed down unchanged. The result is a leather that is not finished when it leaves the tannery – it begins then.

The orange of this strap doesn't seek attention. It has the warm hue of acacia honey, dry summer earth, ancient leather exposed to light. It's not a color that screams – it's one that lingers. And changes. After a few weeks on the wrist, the leather begins to record everything: pressure areas become darker, the surface gains luster where the buckle works, and the shades layer in an unrepeatable way. You won't find two identical Grand Cavalier Cuir straps – not even from the same batch of leather.

At our Milanese atelier, each strap is hand-stitched with needle and waxed thread, stitch by stitch. From the very first moment, the leather yields without resistance – it doesn't need breaking in, it adapts immediately. It's structured enough to maintain its shape; soft enough to forget you're wearing it.

It works on vintage Rolex – Datejust, Oyster Perpetual – on Panerai Radiomir, on bronze watches like the Tudor Black Bay Bronze and the Oris Divers Sixty-Five Bronze. It pairs with the Omega Seamaster heritage, the IWC Portofino, vintage Jaeger-LeCoultre. The warm orange enhances rose gold, bronze, vintage steel: these are the metals it recognizes as its own.

This is not the right strap for those who want an unchanging surface over time, for those who practice water sports, or for those looking for a neutral color. It's made for those who consider natural patina a value – not an imperfection to hide.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have a vintage '72 Datejust with worn lugs — will this strap fit those 20mm lug width attachments, or do I need adjustments?

The lug width is 20, so it's compatible with vintage Datejust. But if your lugs are worn, that's a watch issue, not a strap issue. You should have them checked first — our straps don't compensate for mechanical play. Once sorted, the Grand Cavalier Cuir will sit clean.

Can you find me an identical one in six months when I have the money? Or once it's sold out, is it really gone?

We're not a factory line. Every Grand Cavalier Cuir strap is made at our atelier, but the leather itself — from Conceria Haas — comes batch by batch with natural variation. If you come back in six months, we always have Grand Cavalier Cuir, but it won't be *your* identical one. Not because of a defect — quite the opposite. Anyone who collects understands that's exactly the value.

Is the orange dark from the start or does it arrive rich? And more importantly — does it really change, or is that just marketing speak?

It arrives in a warm tone — acacia honey, dried earth. Not black, not pale. From there the leather does its work: where your wrist bends, it darkens naturally; where the buckle rubs, it takes on shine. After a few weeks you'll see unrepeatable patina. It's not marketing, it's vegetable tanning that ages before your eyes. If you want a frozen color, this isn't the right leather.

I read 'no break-in' — does that mean I put it on a Radiomir tomorrow and it's immediately comfortable, or is that nonsense?

The Grand Cavalier Cuir from Conceria Haas yields without resistance from minute one. It's not stiff, no phase where the bend bothers you. It's structured enough not to collapse, soft enough to be forgotten on your wrist. Put it on tomorrow and it works. Then it keeps evolving over time, but comfort is immediate.

But this Haas tannery — since 1842 — is it still the real one, or has it been bought by someone like everything else?

Conceria Haas has existed since 1842 in the French countryside and tans vegetable leather exactly as it did then: bark, time, artisanal mastery. That's where this strap's leather comes from. If you want to dig into the tannery's own history, that's research beyond the strap — but what you feel in your hand is the direct result of 180 years done exactly this way.
