Spring bars Rolex Explorer 14270 — 20mm drilled lugs
€12,95
Set of two spring bars for Rolex Explorer reference 14270 drilled lugs version, in hardened Swiss Standard steel. Size: 20mm between lugs. Pin 1.8mm. Drilled lugs. The 14270 is the Explorer I produced from 1989 to 2001 — drilled lugs version for the initial phase 1989-1996, first phase before the transition to closed lugs.
The drilled 14270 is the small technical secret of the modern Explorer I family. Applied indices, sapphire crystal, but still drilled lugs like a vintage — the only modern Explorer I with the through-hole. Pin 1.8mm: neither the pure vintage 2.0mm nor the modern 1.5mm, but the correct specification on these transitional lugs. Serious collectors prefer this variant for direct strap changes with a pin pusher.
Same spring bars on every drilled-lug 14270.

Domande Frequenti
Are these spring bars compatible only with the 14270 drilled lugs or do they work on other models?
They are designed for the 14270 drilled lugs 1989-1996, but the 1.8mm pin and drilled lugs make them compatible with other watches that mount this specification. If your watch has drilled lugs and accepts 1.8mm pins, they will work. The 20mm measurement refers to the distance between the lugs, not the strap width: verify it on your model.
Why 1.8mm and not 1.5mm or 2.0mm like other Rolex models?
It is the original Rolex specification for this phase of the 14270. The 1.5mm is modern (post-2000), the 2.0mm is vintage pure. Rolex used 1.8mm on these models for a technical reason: it is the compromise between stability and wear on drilled lugs. If you use the wrong diameter you risk play in the hole or insertion difficulty.
Are drilled lugs more fragile than solid lugs? Do I risk breaking them when installing the spring bar?
No, if you use the correct method. The steel is hardened and resistant. The risk comes from inadequate tools (flat screwdrivers, brute force): use a dedicated tool and press gently. The drilled lugs of the 14270 are as robust as solid lugs, the difference is only in the hole geometry.
If I accidentally buy a 14270 with solid lugs, will these spring bars work anyway?
No, they will not work. The solid lugs (1996-2001 version) are a different geometry: the hole does not pass through and the pin seats differently. Check the exact reference of your 14270 before ordering, or contact me with the serial number if you have doubts about the phase.
