Artificial patina, called fauxtina in English watchmaking circles (a contraction of faux and patina), is a treatment applied in the factory to simulate the natural aging of dials, hands, and indices. It is not a defect or deterioration: it is a deliberate design choice, and this distinction matters.
True patina forms over time through oxidation, light exposure, and chemical degradation of luminescent materials. The Radium and Tritium used until the 1970s and 1980s yellowed characteristically, shifting toward cream, ivory, sometimes tobacco brown. That warm color is something I see regularly at watch fairs and auctions, and many collectors seek it deliberately. Artificial patina mimics that end result without waiting decades. It is typically obtained by coloring Super-LumiNova with yellowish-brown pigments, or by chemically treating the dial or indices during production.
From my bench I see two very different approaches: those who use it with restraint, as on certain Speedmaster re-editions or the Zenith Chronomaster EP Original, where fauxtina adds warmth without compromising legibility; and those who overdo it, producing orange or burnt dials that resemble no genuinely aged watch. In the latter case the result is caricatural, and anyone who has handled enough original pieces spots it immediately.
There is a real technical issue: cream-colored lume reflects less light and reduces contrast in low-light conditions. On a dive watch this is not a negligible detail. On a dress watch or wristwatch chronograph the compromise is generally acceptable.
The term fauxtina originated as ironic criticism within the collector community, and that connotation persists. Not everyone uses it negatively, but anyone employing it knows they are describing something constructed, not earned. The distinction between true and artificial patina is always visible to the expert eye: natural degradation is irregular, asymmetrical, historically coherent with the age of the piece. Artificial patina tends toward perfection, and that is precisely where it gives itself away.
