Mobile

In watchmaking, the term mobile does not describe a single component: it indicates any element that moves according to its own logic, separate from the simple driving of the hands. Understanding which type of mobile we are discussing is the first step to correctly reading a technical sheet or auction catalog.

The most immediate case is the running hand: in the Breguet 5887 and other watches with instantaneous equation of time, a hand runs ahead or behind civil time to show the difference with solar time. «Running» is fitting precisely because it is not locked in a fixed sector, but travels the entire dial over the course of the year.

Different is the mobile bridge of the Freak by Ulysse Nardin: here no hand exists in the traditional sense. The bridge is integral to the barrel of the spring and performs a rotation every twelve hours, sliding on an internal rack within the case. Time indication thus becomes part of structural mechanics, not an overlay.

On the control front, the column wheel — often called a column-wheel — is the mobile that distributes push-button commands in a chronograph, reducing wear compared to cam systems and guaranteeing more reliable repeatability over time. In the rattrapante, or split-seconds chronograph, the additional mobile mechanism allows you to stop one of the two seconds hands to record split times, leaving the other running.

The floating GMT disc in top-tier GMT watches allows the second time zone hand to jump independently: unlike less expensive solutions where the GMT hand drags with local hours, here the axis is separate and the jump is clean, hour by hour.

There are also mobiles that border on automaton: articulated figures, tongues, dragonfly wings, creatures that open to reveal the dial in secret watches. Here the mobile does not indicate anything in the strict sense — or indicates something secondary — but demonstrates that the movement has sufficient energy and leverage to drive complex decorative mechanics. The construction cost of these elements is often higher than that of classic watchmaking complications, precisely because they require movement tolerances but sculptural forms.

An extreme case is the mobile gimbaled mounting of the tourbillon by Greubel Forsey, where two rings hinged at 90° tilt the entire cage every 48 seconds: the mobile does not measure time, it preserves it from gravitational drift on multiple axes simultaneously. Conversely, the inertial masses on the balance staff with mobile hairspring of the Holthinrichs are microscopic mobiles: small counterweights that regulate frequency without touching the hairspring, with benefits to thermal compensation visible only in extended bench measurements.
