The column wheel and the cam system are the two paths watchmaking has taken to solve the same problem: coordinating the start, stop, and reset of a chronograph without mutual interference. They are not equivalent, and the difference is felt on the wrist before you even open the caseback.
The column wheel — also called column cam, command column, or star column: the names vary, the principle does not — is a grooved wheel that rotates in increments, piloting the chronograph levers through cams arranged in a circle. Each button press advances the wheel by one position: start, stop, reset. The movement is crisp, the selection clean. In manual Minerva calibers, in TAG Heuer's TH20-00, in the 761 vertical column caliber, the column is both a technical element and a visible spectacle when the movement is open. It costs more to produce and to service, but transmits forces more directly. In chronographs with a vertical clutch, the column works together with a coupling arranged on the vertical plane rather than the horizontal one: the engagement is gradual, almost free of jerking, and the seconds hand starts without hesitation.
The cam system, of which the Valjoux 7753 is the best-known example in series production, works through shaped profiles rather than grooved teeth. It is robust, tolerant of stress, easy to service in field conditions. In terms of industrial reliability, it has little to envy the column, but the feel of the buttons is different: less crisp, sometimes with a slight perceptible play.
Then there is a third category, less discussed: the modified column wheel. The Moment Meter mounts a reworked version; the Armin Strom Orbit uses column logic not for the chronograph but for the on-demand date mechanism, where one press activates the central hand and a second returns it to neutral. The principle of sequential incremental selection is the same, applied to a different function.
The flyback adds another level: with a single command the chronograph resets and restarts immediately, without passing through stop. It is essential for timing consecutive segments without losing fractions of a second in transitions. It requires more complex command mechanism geometry, because the three phases must be compressed into a single actuation.
From the bench I have disassembled brass columns, steel columns, rhodium columns. The material changes wear over time, not the principle. A well-regulated cam system beats a neglected column: maintenance matters as much as design.
