The bezel is the ring that surrounds the crystal on the front side of the case: apparently simple, but actually one of the most variable and technically complex elements of the entire watch. First distinction to make: fixed or rotating. The fixed bezel is an integral part of the case structure — it can bear a tachymetric scale, as in chronographs, or be purely decorative, as in Datejust models with gold bezels or with baguette-cut diamonds adapted one by one to the irregular geometry of the ring. The rotating bezel adds a measurement function independent of the caliber.

Among rotating bezels, the most important distinction is between unidirectional and bidirectional. The unidirectional bezel rotates only counterclockwise: if accidentally bumped, the displayed time increases rather than decreases, so the diver always reads the remaining time conservatively, never optimistically. It is a safety requirement, not an aesthetic whim. Some manufacturers — Yema with the bezel-lock on the Superman, Squale with the push-to-release system of the 2001 — add locking mechanisms that prevent any involuntary rotation. The bidirectional, instead, rotates both ways and is used to read a second time zone on a 24-hour scale, or for aviation timing.

There is also the internal bezel, a solution adopted by Longines on the Legend Diver and by Bremont with the Roto-Click: the graduated ring is housed under the crystal and operated by a dedicated crown. The advantage is complete protection from sand, impacts, and accidental manipulation; the click remains perceptible, but is transmitted through the crown rather than from the outer ring.

In terms of materials, the history runs from the bakelite of the 1950s — phenolic plastic used on the earliest GMT-Masters, now highly sought after by collectors — to anodized aluminum, to ceramics. Rolex calls its monolithic ceramic Cerachrom: scratch-resistant, UV-resistant, with engravings filled in gold via PVD. The new Daytona uses a variant based on zirconia and tungsten carbide with a metallic appearance. Omega used oxalic anodized aluminum in hematite red color for the Speedmaster X-33 Marstimer. Artya worked sapphire with NanoSapphire treatment to obtain four colors on a single block.

Surface finishes matter as much as the material itself. Clou de Paris — a pattern of microscopic pyramids — is a traditional decoration that appears on bezels from manufacture houses like Piaget. Knurled milling creates micro-grooves that improve grip. Super-LumiNova can be injected directly into the insert to make the 60-minute scale readable in the dark. From my bench, I often see collectors underestimate bezel condition: on a vintage piece, scratches on the aluminum bezel or fading of the anodization signal the authentic age of the watch — polishing or replacing it reduces its value.
