Spring bars Rolex Submariner 6538 — 20mm Big Crown
€12,95
Set of two spring bars for Rolex Submariner reference 6538, in hardened Swiss Standard steel. Size: 20mm between the lugs. Pin 2.0mm. Drilled lugs. The 6538 is the Big Crown Submariner produced from 1956 to 1959 — four years of production, a few thousand pieces, the watch worn by James Bond in Dr. No.
The 6538 has the 8mm crown — Big Crown, hence the name — and a case that is practically identical to the 5510 and 6536/1 of the same era. For the strap, the geometry is that of the first Submariner family: 20mm lug, through-hole, 2.0mm pin. On an original 6538 you do not fit a strap at random: the case is nearly seventy years old and every detail matters.
The same piece I fit on the 6538s of my collector clients. The same supplier.

Domande Frequenti
Do these spring bars work on all vintage Submariners or only on the 6538?
They work on the 6538 and any Submariner with a 20mm lug width and 2.0mm pins — including the 5510, 6536/1, and other models from the same generation. What changes is the case geometry and pin positioning: on the 6538, the through-hole has a specific tolerance, so these bars are optimised for that exact geometry. If you have a different vintage reference, verify the pin diameter and lug width first.
Is the 2.0mm pin truly compatible with original Rolex 6538 lugs, or do I risk damage?
The 2.0mm pin is the Rolex standard for this series — it is correct. The only real risk is installation: if you force laterally during assembly, you can enlarge the hole in the strap lug. Use a spring tool or small punch, insert the pin perpendicularly, not sideways. On vintage steel lugs, they are difficult to damage, but technique matters.
What does ’Swiss Standard tempered’ mean? How long do these bars last compared to original Rolex ones?
Swiss Standard guarantees precise tolerances and controlled hardness — tempering prevents oxidation and maintains elasticity. They last as long as originals, possibly longer: original 1950s examples have endured decades of salt corrosion and movement. These are modern tempered, so more resistant to oxidation, but mechanical wear is the same — it depends on how often you change the strap.
On an original 6538, the strap ’does not mount casually’ — what do you mean? Do these bars maintain the correct geometry?
The 6538 has a particular lug geometry: the through-hole is not centred like on other Rolex models, the pin must align with the specific case thickness. These bars are calibrated for that geometry — but assembly remains manual and requires attention. If the strap does not fit cleanly, do not force it: it means alignment is not perfect and the bar may be slightly oversized for your example.
