Set of two spring bars for Rolex Explorer II reference 1655, in hardened Swiss Standard steel. Size: 20mm between lugs. Pin 2.0mm. Drilled lugs. The 1655 is the first Explorer II, produced from 1971 to 1985 — nicknamed Steve McQueen even though there has never been any proof that McQueen actually wore one.

The 1655 has the fixed orange 24-hour hand, fixed graduated bezel, 39mm case. Drilled lugs like the entire Rolex sport family of the Seventies. Pin 2.0mm on drilled hole: same specification as the 1675 and the 16750. Although the 1655 is less known than its Submariner cousin, the strap work is identical.

Same spring bars on every 1655 I work on in the atelier. Same supplier.

Domande Frequenti

Are these spring bars compatible with my 1675 or 16750?

Yes, exactly. The 1655, 1675, and 16750 share the same specification: drilled lugs and 2.0mm pins. If you own one of these models, these bars are compatible. The only thing to verify is that your original bracelet lugs are actually drilled—if they’re male-to-male, they won’t fit.

Is the pin really 2.0mm? Won’t it fall out during installation?

Yes, 2.0mm confirmed. It’s not a large gauge—that’s why care matters. My advice: use a dedicated tool (springbar tool), not fingernails or screwdrivers. If the pin drops on the table, recovering it is easy; the real risk is forcing the bar into the lugs and cracking them, so take your time.

These are Swiss Standard steel: what’s the difference versus common steel?

Swiss Standard is tempered to a specific hardness that makes it resistant without being brittle—it maintains elastic memory better over time. It’s not a lifetime guarantee, but it withstands more load-discharge cycles compared to uncontrolled steel. For a 1655 that’s perhaps 50 years old, it’s the logical choice.

If I install these bars on a modern bracelet and put it on my 1655, will the fit be perfect?

It depends on the bracelet. If the modern bracelet has drilled lugs at 20mm (standard sports spec), technically it fits. But the 1655 has Rolex sports cases with specific tolerances—you might have minimal play between bracelet and case. Better to test first with a bracelet you know, to feel the real fit.
