Spring bars Rolex Explorer 1016 — 20mm drilled lugs
€12,95
Set of two spring bars for Rolex Explorer reference 1016, in tempered Swiss Standard steel. Size: 20mm between lugs. Pin diameter: 2.0mm. For the entire 1016 production, from 1963 to 1989 — the Explorer with the longest production run in the Rolex catalogue, twenty-six years in a row.
The 1016 is the benchmark of the Explorer. Drilled lugs throughout the vintage production, 2.0mm pin to specification. When a 1016 arrives in the atelier with lugs worn out from incorrect spring bars, it is always the same story: undersized pin, progressive play, hole that becomes oval. Difficult to recover without turning.
I fit them in the atelier on every 1016 that passes across the bench. Same piece, same supplier.

Domande Frequenti
I have a 1016 from '78 and the lugs are already somewhat worn. If I install these spring bars now, can I recover the holes or is it too late?
It depends on how advanced the oval is. If the play is still contained, the right spring bars stop the degradation and the 1016 becomes stable again. If the holes are already significantly deformed, lathe work is needed before installing them — that’s what we do here in the atelier when a 1016 arrives in these conditions. The classic problem is that with undersized pins the damage accumulates quickly, so acting immediately limits the damage.
Why is 2.0mm so important if visually there’s no difference?
Because it’s the original specification of the 1016. An undersized pin — even by a fraction of a millimeter — creates play that over time ovalizes the hole. It’s not a question of millimeters: it’s a question of tolerances. The 1016 has 26 years of production behind it, and all original lugs are drilled for that diameter. If you install wrong pins, you’re damaging what you have.
I have straps from different brands and want to swap them on different watches — can I use these spring bars on another 20mm non-Rolex?
No, I don’t guarantee it and don’t recommend it. These are specific to the 1016 and its lug attachment geometry. The dimensions may look the same, but the pin diameter and depth of the drilled lugs vary between models — even between brands. If it’s not a 1016, don’t install them.
A 1016 from the '80s arrives at my place and I don’t know if the original lugs are still good. How do I tell if I need these?
Move the strap slightly from side to side on the case tube. If you feel play, if the attachment is loose, or if you see that the spring bar isn’t quite flush against the lugs, then the holes are worn. At that point new spring bars are needed. The signal is always the same: movement where there shouldn’t be any.
I’ve seen 20mm spring bars online at ridiculous prices. What’s the real difference between those and these?
The difference is in the pin: diameter, tolerance, steel hardness. An undersized pin costs less and doesn’t meet Rolex spec — that’s what creates the progressive play we talked about. Installing wrong spring bars on a 1016 is like putting on a band-aid: it works for two minutes, then the damage continues. I only install these in the atelier, same spring bar, same supplier, always.
