Set of two spring bars for Rolex Day-Date reference 18238 in yellow gold, in hardened Swiss Standard steel. Size: 20mm between the lugs. Pin 1.8mm. The 18238 is the yellow gold Day-Date 36 produced from 1988 to 2000 — the transition between the vintage 1803 and the subsequent 118238, marking the leap from Plexi to sapphire crystal.

The 18238 is the President of the transition. It retains the 36mm case and the manual 3155 movement (later 3155A), but introduces sapphire crystal and a case with a more refined surface. Closed lugs from the first series (unlike the drilled 1803), 1.8mm pin. The pin remains wider than the modern 1.5mm standard: Rolex maintains the classic President specification up to the 118238.

The same spring bars on every client’s 18238.

Domande Frequenti

Do these spring bars work only with the 18238 or are they compatible with other yellow gold Day-Date models?

They work on the 18238 and the 1803 that preceded it — both have the 1.8mm pin and blind lugs. Do not use them on the subsequent 118238: that one switched to the modern 1.5mm pin. If you’re unsure about your watch, check the pin: if it’s visibly thicker than current standard, you’re good.

Can I fit a universal bracelet with these spring bars or must I keep the original combination?

Technically yes, but the 1.8mm pin limits your options — many modern bracelets are built for 1.5mm. If you want to try an aftermarket bracelet, make sure its lugs accept an 1.8mm pin without excessive play, otherwise the bracelet will rattle on the case.

How delicate is the installation? Do I risk damaging the blind lugs?

The blind lugs on the 18238 are robust, but the real risk is the pin: if you twist it during installation, it’s difficult to extract. Use a proper watchmaking tool — the pin must be pushed straight, without angling. Done carefully, it’s not a difficult operation; rushing is the only thing that ruins it.

These are in steel — why not gold like the watch?

Gold is unsuitable for a spring bar: it’s too soft and would deform under the cyclic load from the bracelet moving on your wrist. Tempered steel maintains tension and shape over time. It’s not visible: it stays hidden inside the lug. Rolex itself has used this solution forever, even on gold President models.
