Set of two spring bars for Rolex Day-Date reference 118238 in yellow gold, in tempered Swiss Standard steel. Size: 20mm between the lugs. Pin 1.8mm. Blind lugs. The 118238 is the Day-Date 36 yellow gold produced from 2000 to 2008 — the last Day-Date 36mm in the catalogue before the Day-Date II 41mm, with prototype Maxi case.
The 118238 is the first-generation President Maxi case. It retains the traditional 36mm formula but with slightly wider lugs and a case with greater wrist presence. Stable automatic calibre 3155A, sapphire crystal, blind lugs. Pin 1.8mm — Rolex maintains the President specification for consistency with the earlier 18238 and 1803, even on a modernised case.

Are these spring bars compatible only with the 118238 or do they also fit other Day-Date 36mm gold models?
The 20mm × 1.8mm is the Rolex standard for all Day-Date 36mm models with solid lugs, including ref. 18238, 18248 and other gold President watches. What matters is that your watch has solid lugs (not drilled): if it does, these fit perfectly. Check that the pin is actually 1.8mm — on some vintage ref. it might be slightly different.
Can I use them on non-Rolex straps, like a vintage Oyster or aftermarket bracelet?
Yes, as long as the strap has a 20mm lug width and solid lugs. The 1.8mm pin diameter is the Swiss standard for this size. One thing to watch: the endlinks of a different strap might not close perfectly on the Maxi case — measure before final installation.
What’s the risk of installing them incorrectly? Can I damage the lugs?
The real risk is inserting them at an angle or using the wrong tool. If you force the pin sideways, you can scratch the gold around the lug seat. Use a dedicated tool with a precise slot and insert the wider end of the pin into the lugs first, then snap the retainer. If you’ve never done it, have someone help you the first time.
How long do these spring bars last? Should I expect the pin to wear out?
The hardened Swiss Standard steel holds up well, but it depends on how often you change straps. If you swap every week, in 5-10 years the pin loses some elasticity and the strap might rattle — then it’s worth replacing. If you change rarely, they easily last a decade without issues.
