Spring bars Datejust 36 steel — 20mm drilled lugs

4.8 Customers rate us 4.8/5 based on 256 reviews.

Set of two spring bars for Rolex Datejust 36 in steel with drilled lugs, in hardened Swiss Standard steel. Size: 20mm between lugs. Pin 1.8mm. Drilled lugs. Compatible with vintage Datejust 36 steel produced from the Sixties through the Eighties — references such as 1601, 1603, 16030, 16234 first series.

The Datejust 36 steel with drilled lugs is the most widespread Rolex dress watch of all time. 36mm case, traditional 20mm lugs, drilled through the Eighties included. Pin 1.8mm — the intermediate Datejust specification between the 1.5mm modern dress and the 2.0mm vintage sport. On a 1601 coming back from service, these are the standard replacement spring bars.

The same spring bars on every Datejust 36 steel with drilled lugs that I work on in the atelier.

Domande Frequenti

Will these spring bars fit my 16234 from the Nineties, or only the 1601?

The 16234 first series (until mid-Nineties) still has drilled lugs at 20mm with 1.8mm pins, so yes. From the 16234 second series onwards, Rolex switched to solid lugs: these bars won’t fit there. Check if your lugs have the side holes — if they do, you’re good.

Is the 1.8mm pin really different from the 2.0mm? Is there a risk it won’t hold properly?

It’s a real difference: the 1.8mm is Rolex dress standard until the Eighties, the 2.0mm is sports. If you use a 2.0mm on 1.8mm drilled lugs, the strap will move laterally. Our 1.8mm fits precisely into the original grooves — no play.

Can I use them on a new 36 Datejust, like one from 2020?

No. Current 36 Datejusts have solid lugs (not drilled) and 2.0mm pins. These bars are specific to vintage drilled watches. Forcing them in will damage both the lugs and the pins.

How do I remove and install spring bars without damaging the watch?

You need a short, flat spring bar tool — it enters the drilled lugs from above, you push the pin sideways until it pops, then extract the bar. To install, reverse the process: position the bar in the grooves and use the tool to re-engage the pin. Done gently, no scratches on the case.
