The G-Shock is not a watch line: it is a construction philosophy born from a specific problem. In 1983, Casio engineer Kikuo Ibe set himself three measurable objectives — 10 bar water resistance, 10-year battery life, survival of a free fall from 10 meters — and called them Triple 10. That principle has remained the technical foundation of the entire production, from entry-level resin models to titanium MR-G watches.
The structure that allows impacts to be absorbed without being transmitted to the movement is based on a simple principle: separate the internal module from the external case with layers of yielding material. In the original DW-5000C, the internal metal case is suspended within the external resin case through shock-absorbing bearings. This design — called «Square» by collectors for its characteristic shape — has remained unchanged in geometry, but has been implemented in many different constructions.
High-end MTG models adopt the Dual-Core Guard monocoque: a rigid monolithic structure wrapped by a double perimeter guard. Here, robustness comes not from yielding but from structural continuity of the shell. The Carbon Core Guard follows the same logic with a different material: carbon fiber reinforcement integrated into the case, which increases rigidity without adding appreciable mass.
Metal-covered models occupy a middle position: the internal core remains in resin — with its shock-absorption properties — while the outer crown is in stainless steel. The result is a compromise between the two philosophies. In GMW-B5000 models, the case is entirely steel, and shock protection is entrusted to the internally suspended module.
The Triple G Resist certification — present on high-end models — extends the original concept to three categories of stress: impacts, centrifugal forces, and intense vibrations. It is not an update to Triple 10 but an additional requirement that covers scenarios beyond simple free fall.
Surface treatments such as ion plating and case recrystallization (present in the GMW-B5000PG-9) have no structural function: they act only on the outer layer and do not modify shock-resistant properties. It is worth saying this, because marketing tends to blend aesthetics and engineering as if they were the same thing. They are not.
Regarding the internal module: Casio uses the term «module» to indicate the entire movement and electronics. Two G-Shocks with the same case can mount different modules, with completely different displays, functions, and connectivity capabilities. Anyone buying a used G-Shock should verify the module number, not just the aesthetic reference.
