High-fire enameling is not a decoration: it is a chemical transformation. Vitreous enamel — finely ground metal oxides suspended in water — is deposited onto a metal or ceramic substrate and then fired in a kiln at temperatures ranging from 800 to 1,000 °C, sometimes higher. At those temperatures the material melts, bonds to the substrate and solidifies into a surface as hard as quartz, with a color depth that no lacquer or resin can approach.
The term grand feu — great fire, in French — distinguishes this technique from cold enameling or varnishing: heat is not an accessory to the process, it is the process. Every firing carries risk. The substrate can warp. The enamel can crack due to differences in thermal expansion. On small-diameter pieces, like watch dials, the scrap rate can be extremely high. A smooth, undecorated white high-fire pocket watch dial is already a difficult result to achieve cleanly; a dial with hand-painted miniatures requires successive firings — each color layer has its own temperature window — and each one erases the work of the previous ones if anything goes wrong.
Technical variations are diverse. In grand feu champlevé the enamel fills cavities carved into the metal. In cloisonné the zones are bounded by thin walls of gold soldered to the substrate. In paillonné microscopic metal leaves are interspersed between successive layers of transparent enamel, creating effects of depth and refraction. In all cases the logic is the same: stratification, firing, controlled cooling.
It is worth separating this technique from high-temperature ceramics used for cases. Materials like sintered zirconium are fired at 1,450 °C for days, and some plasma ceramics pass through kilns at 20,000 °C that alter their crystalline structure. These are industrial processes, not enameling craftsmanship: high temperature is the only common denominator. At the bench I have learned to recognize authentic high-fire enamel under a loupe: a polished but not mirror-like glass surface, soft edges, color that shifts tone with the angle of light. Even good lacquer is flat. Fired enamel has a life of its own.
