Satinatura

Satin finishing is a matte finish obtained through controlled abrasion of the metal surface, and in watchmaking it is never a single operation: it's a family of techniques with radically different geometries, tools, and results. Confusing them is the most common mistake I see, even from people who've worked in the industry for years.

The fundamental distinction is between directional satin finishing and diffuse satin finishing. The first — called straight graining — produces regular parallel lines, visible to the naked eye, with an almost industrial effect that's widely used on cases with instrumental vocation. The second, diffuse brushing, eliminates any apparent direction: the surface is opaque and uniform, without readable pattern. Both reduce reflections compared to mirror polishing, but the aesthetic result is completely different.

Then there are geometric variations tied to the shape of the piece. Radial satin finishing — sunburst or radially brushed — radiates from the center outward and creates optical depth on dials: Chopard uses it on L.U.C. dials, Cartier used it on the Tank Américaine Art Deco. Circular brushing rotates concentrically instead. Vertical satinage, applied to dials, creates parallel vertical lines that reduce frontal reflections without disturbing readability.

On the machinery front, numerically controlled lapidary allows restoration of original satin finishing with a precision that would be impossible to guarantee by hand in production. For fine pieces or restoration work, however, the hand remains irreplaceable: the plates of Hazemann Monnin calibers are satin-finished with silicone spheres, an artisanal technique that leaves a texture no machine can faithfully replicate.

Microblast is a separate case: it uses microparticles projected at high pressure and produces a particularly fingerprint-resistant opaque surface, well-suited to ceramics. Panerai on the PAM01350 works instead through progressive subtraction: satin-finishes everything, then polishes only the edges with a gradient that simulates the natural wear of metal.

In movement finishing, satin finishing alternates with mirror polishing to create contrast between flat surfaces and edges. On a skeletonized piece like the Vacheron Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin, this interplay is deliberate: satin-finished plates make the polished surfaces of wheels and anglage edges stand out. From the bench, I can tell you that the quality of satin finishing is evaluated in raking light: the lines must be uniform, without bounce zones or pressure variations. When the restoration isn't done well, you see it immediately.
