Rotor

The rotor is the oscillating mass that in automatic movements converts wrist motion into mainspring charge. It is not a passive component: its geometry, material, and positioning determine charging efficiency, caliber thickness, and increasingly, the aesthetic visible through the sapphire caseback.

The most common configuration is the central rotor, mounted coaxially to the movement and free to rotate a full 360 degrees. Charging can occur in one direction or both: bidirectional systems, such as the Pellaton developed by IWC in the late Forties, exploit every oscillation regardless of direction, improving overall efficiency. Modern versions of the Pellaton replace critical wear points with ceramic components.

The micro-rotor is a rotor of reduced dimensions, often positioned off-axis from the caliber center. It reduces watch thickness without sacrificing automatic winding: examples include the SXH5 caliber, where it is in platinum, or the PF052, where it is in finely decorated 22K gold. The peripheral rotor is instead mounted on the movement's perimeter, leaving the center visually clear and also contributing to thickness reduction, as in the Breguet 581DPE.

Material directly impacts efficiency: tungsten, being very dense, maximizes angular momentum at equal dimensions; platinum offers similar density with better corrosion resistance; 22K gold is a more traditional choice, common in manufactures that care about caliber readability from the caseback. Rose gold or rhodium plating is instead an aesthetic choice overlaid on functional mass in different material.

Rotor skeletonization, partial or total, serves two purposes that do not always coincide: lightening the mass (with some loss of efficiency) and opening the view to underlying components. In the Chronoswiss Small Second the tungsten-pierced rotor mounts a ball bearing; in the Urwerk UR-150 Scorpion a dual turbine mechanism instead regulates skeletonized rotor speed to prevent overcharging from abrupt movements. These are opposite solutions: one maximizes visibility, the other governs charging dynamics.

On the design front, some houses use the rotor as a communication surface: the blue PVD Bristol Flower motif, Raymond Weil's W shape, the Fibonacci spirals of the Bianchet UltraFino, the mountain crest profile of Norqain. The Double Rotor patented by Perrelet in 1995 adds a second rotor visible on the dial, mechanically linked to the rear one. These are choices of identity, not function. From the workbench I recognize them immediately: a well-balanced rotor spins with uniform inertia and stops without bounce.
