Among all time-related complications, those managing a second time zone are the most misunderstood — even by those selling them. The fundamental distinction is between GMT traveller and GMT office, and it's not a matter of fashion: it's a matter of mechanics.
In the GMT traveller, the hour hand moves in one-hour increments without stopping the minute and second hands. Those crossing time zones during travel set the new local time directly on the central hands. The 24-hour GMT hand remains anchored to the departure time. It's the system of the Rolex GMT-Master II from the mid-1980s onward: elegant, precise, designed for those who fly.
In the GMT office — also called caller — the opposite happens: the 24-hour GMT hand moves independently, while the local time is left untouched. It's practical for those staying at a desk monitoring a second time zone. The Sellita SW330-2 caliber works this way, as does Seiko's 4R34. It's not an inferior system: it's a different system, designed for different needs.
The original GMT-Master I was rougher: the GMT hand was mechanically coupled to the local time, so moving the hour hand also moved the GMT hand. You read the second time zone on the rotating 24-hour bezel, which was the active element of the system. The fixed 24-hour bezel — as in the Tudor Black Bay Pro — instead functions as a static reference: it doesn't adjust, doesn't shift accidentally, and you simply mentally rotate the value read on the GMT hand.
There are also less conventional solutions. The GMT flyer uses a rotating disc under the dial instead of a central hand: the Miyota 9075 does this with a colored sector on 24 positions. The city bezel replaces the numerical scale with city names. The GPS Solar — as in Astron's 5X83 caliber — eliminates the time zone problem at its root: the satellite sets everything, with a declared accuracy of ±15 seconds per month even without signal.
At the opposite pole of simplicity is the original Freak by Ulysse Nardin from 2001: no dial, no traditional hands, no crown. The barrel completes a rotation in 12 hours and serves as the hour indicator. A mobile bridge fixed to the barrel slides on an internal rack and displays the minutes. Radical architecture, but the basic principle — showing where you are in the 12-hour cycle — remains identical to any budget caliber.
Behind the counter, I've seen many customers buy a GMT without knowing which of the two systems they had in their hands. It's worth understanding before, not after.
