Guilloché is a repetitive geometric engraving on metal, executed with a rose engine lathe or straight-turning lathe. It is not a surface applied decoration: it is a physical groove, incised into the metal itself, which redistributes light according to the viewing angle. This distinction matters, because confusing guilloché with printing or CNC milling is a mistake that costs you wrong results in the workshop.
The traditional machine — the rose engine lathe, tour à guillocher in French — works by material subtraction with a burin guided by a shaped cam. The cam determines the pattern. Changing the cam means changing the motif: from clous de Paris (small regular pyramids that throw light) to grain d'orge (barleycorn, softer, almost wavy) to grain de riz, panier, flamme, écaille de poisson (fish scales) or twill. Each cam has a history. Some manufactures have kept them for centuries: Breguet has cams for the Quai de l'Horloge pattern, inspired by the two islands on the Seine where Abraham-Louis Breguet kept his workshop; the Petit Trianon motif appears on the rotors of the Reine de Naples. Czapek developed its own Singularité pattern with Metalem, which creates an optical illusion of curves immersing toward the center of the dial.
The distinction that no retailer ever makes clearly is the one between hand guilloché and mechanically assisted guilloché. Guilloché executed on a manually operated rose engine lathe — like that of Atelier Renzetti on nineteenth-century lathes, or the one used at Laine Watches — requires the operator to control pressure, speed and overlap pass after pass. Every mistake is permanent. The result has a micro-irregularity that light reveals and that no CNC process has yet convincingly replicated.
When a translucent grand feu enamel is applied over the guilloché, the result is called flinqué: the enamel amplifies the underlying pattern instead of hiding it, and the dial acquires chromatic depth. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Enamel Hokusai works this way, with barleycorn, wave or herringbone variations under translucent enamel. The Patek Philippe Flamenco uses the same principle on the scene sun with red flinqué enamel.
Guilloché is not limited to the dial. It appears on rotors, bridges, case backs and even on cases. De Bethune applies a random guilloché — an irregular pattern that imitates the movement of waves — directly on the blue titanium bridges of the DB28XS. From the bench I have seen pieces with guilloché on the case back almost invisible to the naked eye: work done for those who know, not for those who watch.
