Technically it's a cutout in the dial, often framed with a stamped or applied bezel, through which the day disc emerges. The big date variant — found in Glashütte Original movements and certain Jaeger-LeCoultre calibres — splits the function across two separate discs, one for tens and one for units, mounted coaxially or side by side. The result is a larger, more readable numeral, but mechanically more complex to regulate and synchronize during the jump.
The panorama date, a signature Glashütte Original solution, features a wide window opening with a contrasting colored background: it improves readability without physically enlarging the numerals. Rolex's Cyclops solves the same problem differently: it doesn't modify the dial but instead etches the crystal, applying a magnifying lens over the date window. It's a polarizing solution — those who love it find it practical; those who don't prefer the version without, as happens with certain Sea-Dwellers.
The window takes on a structurally different role in montres à guichets — the windowed watches of the 1920s and 1930s — and in jumping hour complications. Here the window isn't accessory: it's the sole means of reading the time. The hour numeral appears in an opening and jumps instantaneously at each hour, rather than scrolling gradually like a hand. The mechanism requires a cam system with energy accumulated and released suddenly; this explains why certain vintage jump hours lost accuracy precisely at the moment of the jump. The Cartier Tank à Guichets is the most cited stylistic reference; the Doxa from the 1930s is a mechanically interesting case, with minutes indicated by a cursor visible through arc-shaped cutouts in the caseback.
The open heart is another type of window, different in function: it doesn't serve to read data, but to display the oscillating balance. It's a window onto the movement, not the calendar. The constructive principle is the same — an opening in the dial — but the intention is aesthetic and communicative.
A special case is the Panerai patent for the transparent date disc: the disc exists, but is invisible on the skeletonized dial, revealing the date only through the window at 3 o'clock. Ingenious because it resolves a real conflict: showing the date without visually occluding the movement beneath.
