An integrated chronograph is not simply a movement with chronographic function: it is a caliber conceived from the first blueprint with the chronograph as a structural part of the architecture, not as a subsequent addition. The distinction from a modular chronograph is not a matter of degree, it is one of nature.
In the modular design, the time-measurement mechanism is stacked on top of the base movement — often an existing three-hand caliber — and can theoretically be removed. This results in greater thickness, more junctions between components from different sources, and less direct energy transmission. In an integrated chronograph, the bridges, wheels and levers of the chronograph share the same plate as the caliber: there is no plan B, everything is designed together. The result is almost always a thinner movement and mechanically more coherent.
The control system — that is, how the movement responds to button pressure — can be either cam and lever or column wheel. The column wheel coordinates start, stop and reset through specially profiled teeth that guarantee cleaner and more repeatable action compared to the cam solution. Most contemporary integrated chronographs use the column wheel, but there are well-constructed historical calibers with cam systems: the ETA Valjoux 7750 is the most common example.
Equally important is the type of clutch. The horizontal clutch — traditional — engages the chronograph wheel laterally. The vertical clutch engages from above, which eliminates the small jump visible on the chronograph second hand at the moment of engagement: a technical detail with practical consequences for measurement readability. The vertical clutch is more complex to balance but delivers more precise engagement results.
The most cited historical cases are the 1969 Zenith El Primero — the first integrated automatic high-frequency chronograph — and the Reverso's caliber 860, which uses a column wheel and horizontal clutch in an almost impossible space. More recent examples include Audemars Piguet's caliber 4401 with vertical clutch and flyback function, and the IWC 69385 with integrated column wheel in the automatic caliber.
From the bench, I'll say something that magazines rarely make explicit: the complexity of an integrated chronograph makes servicing more demanding and expensive than a modular one. Anyone purchasing should know this. It's not a flaw, it's the logic of a mechanism without compromises.
