Complications related to time zone management fall into three categories that are often mixed together. Classic GMT adds a central 24-hour hand linked to the base movement: it indicates a second time zone but is not independently adjustable from local time, at least in historical implementations. True dual time — in the technical sense of the term — instead features a separate indication of the second time zone that is adjustable without stopping the caliber, as occurs from the Rolex 3085 caliber onward or in the independent gray hand of certain Moser watches. World time, a system developed by Louis Cottier and adopted by Patek Philippe, extends the concept to twenty-four simultaneously readable time zones via a ring with city names. These are different mechanisms, not variants of the same concept.
Travel time is a commercial term indicating a dual time with an integrated day-night indicator for both time zones: useful when traveling because it avoids mental calculations about the daylight cycle of the destination time zone. The Breguet system with instantaneous jump is more sophisticated: a single pusher synchronizes hands, date, and day-night indicator in one stroke, without an additional GMT hand.
