A bracelet is not simply a metal strap: it is an articulated structure with its own geometry, where each link has a precise mechanical role in distributing weight and ensuring flexibility on the wrist. Distinguishing between construction types is the first step to understanding what you're buying or repairing.

The fundamental distinction is between integrated and interchangeable bracelets. In an integrated bracelet — like the wave on the Ebel Sport Classic or Louis Erard solutions — the lugs are fixed and the case-to-bracelet transition is calculated in the original design: it cannot be disassembled without altering the structure. In an interchangeable bracelet, including those with quick-release systems, the end links attach to the lugs via spring bars or snap springs, allowing replacement without tools. Systems like Rolex's Easylink add another layer: rapid extension of a few millimeters integrated directly into the clasp, useful when wearing the watch over a thick sleeve.

There are three main link constructions. The flat link — Rolex's Oyster model is the most studied example, with the Jubilee variant featuring smaller, more articulated links — offers solidity and broad contact surface. The beads-of-rice, with rounded and fluid links, was the standard choice for vintage divers in the 1960s-70s and cycles back on modern reissues. The Milanese mesh is an interwoven mesh construction: quality is read in the graduated taper, the absence of visible welds, and the solidity of the tubes at the lugs.

Adjustment systems are a separate chapter. The Komfit by Forstner, patented in 1939, was the first to allow micro-extensions without tools: an idea we see today in Tudor's T-fit and Grand Seiko's micro-adjustment. The practical difference between these systems lies in the granularity of increments and ease of operation while wearing the watch. The deployant clasp — folding, side-opening — is the standard on quality bracelets: it protects the clasp from impacts and distributes pressure on the wrist better than a traditional buckle.

At the workbench, I've disassembled bracelets with over forty years of use: the critical wear points are always the same — the link pins in the center links and the internal mechanism of the deployant. A well-constructed bracelet, with tempered steel pins and milled rather than stamped links, lasts decades. A poorly constructed one loosens within a few years, regardless of the brand name engraved on it.
