The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Perfect Watch Strap
There’s something powerful about a watch. Not just in its mechanism, but in what it communicates about its wearer. But here’s the secret: the strap plays as important a role as the watch itself.
In decades of working with watches and handmade straps in Italy, I’ve seen too many collectors—and even those buying their first watch—underestimate the importance of the strap. This guide aims to change that. I’ll explain everything you need to know to choose the right strap for your lifestyle, your watch, and your wrist.
Why the Strap Is So Important
The right strap enhances your watch. It can transform a sports model into something elegant or make a dress watch suitable for a casual look. It affects not only aesthetics but also comfort, durability, and versatility.
- Perfectly fitting the watch case
- Reflecting your personal style
- Being comfortable for everyday wear

Technical terms every enthusiast should know
Lug width: the measurement in millimeters between the watch lugs. Each strap must exactly match this measurement—no more, no less.
Belly cut: the cut from the belly of the reptile (alligator, crocodile). Symmetrical, soft scales, characteristic of high-end watchmaking. Alternative: hornback, from the back, with a central bony ridge.
Shell Cordovan Horween: the Cordovan leather from Horween tannery in Chicago—six months of vegetable tanning, deep patina, exceptional durability. One of the most sought-after materials for watch straps.
