The Day-Date 36 1834, seen from the bench

The dial displays both the day of the week in full and the date. It houses the automatic Rolex caliber 1555 or 1556 with Glucydur balance and Microstella hairspring, certified COSC. The case is 18-karat gold with screw-down caseback; lug width measures 20mm at the attachment point and approximately 16mm at the tip. Original mineral crystal; later versions feature sapphire. Straight-end straps of 20mm are required for proper fit with original Rolex lugs.

Frequently asked questions

What is the lug width of the Rolex Day-Date 36 ref. 1834?

The Rolex Day-Date 36 ref. 1834 features lugs with a width of 20mm at the point of attachment to the case. To measure it accurately, use a digital calliper placed internally between the two lugs, in direct contact with the case middle.

What is the best strap for the Rolex Day-Date 36 1834?

For the Day-Date 36 ref. 1834 in yellow gold, an alligator strap with vegetable tanning and hornback grain is the most coherent choice with the watch's haute horlogerie character. Chevreau calfskin suits everyday wear, whilst vulcanised rubber works particularly well on white gold versions for a contemporary contrast.

How do I change the strap on a Rolex Day-Date 36 1834?

To replace the strap on the Rolex Day-Date 36 ref. 1834, use a spring bar tool to compress and remove the spring bars inside the lugs. Work on a soft cushion or watch holder to avoid scratching the gold case. If in doubt, consult a qualified watchmaker.

Are there aftermarket straps compatible with the Rolex Day-Date 36 1834?

Yes, there are numerous aftermarket straps compatible with the Rolex Day-Date 36 ref. 1834, featuring a 20mm straight-end attachment. How long does a leather strap last on a Rolex Day-Date 36 1834?

The longevity of a leather strap depends on the quality of the tanning, daily use and maintenance. A high-grade vegetable-tanned alligator strap, kept away from excessive perspiration and water, can last between 3 and 6 years whilst retaining its integrity. The patina it develops over time is considered an integral part of the strap's aesthetic value.
