Frequently asked questions
What is the exact lug width of the Oris ProPilot 01 751 7697 4264-07 5 20 15GFC?
The lug width (ansa) of the ProPilot is 20mm. This measurement represents the distance between the two horizontal pins on the case. Precision is essential before ordering a replacement strap: even minor deviations compromise the fit and overall aesthetics. We recommend using a digital calliper, positioning the tip between the inner pins.
What is the best strap type for this Oris model?
There is no universal answer—it depends on intended use and context. For a professional aviator, a robust cotton NATO strap honours the watch's functional aviation heritage. For formal occasions, an alligator leather with vegetable tanning in tortora or cognac tones amplifies the case's sophistication. For humidity resistance and durability, FKM rubber is the modern choice. We recommend considering your primary use case before deciding.
How do I change the strap on my Oris ProPilot without damaging the case?
Remove the watch and place it on a soft surface (microfibre cloth). Use a spring bar tool to remove the pins: insert the thin end into the side hole of the case with caution to avoid scratching the steel. Push the pin outward until it emerges. Repeat on the opposite side. Align the new strap with the holes and reintroduce the pins carefully. A common mistake is forcing the pin—it should slide smoothly.
Can I use a generic 20mm aftermarket strap on this Oris?
Technically yes, but we do not recommend it. Generic 20mm straps do not always respect the geometric tolerances of the Oris ProPilot case. The ProPilot's lugs feature specific curvature and thickness: a poorly calibrated strap creates visible gaps between the lug and strap, compromising aesthetic integrity. Oris recommends straps specifically dimensioned for the model. An artisanal solution ensures compatibility and longevity.
How long does a leather strap last on an aviator watch like the ProPilot?
Durability depends on leather quality and usage context. An alligator with vegetable tanning, well maintained, lasts 4–6 years with professional use in cockpit environments (dry, controlled settings). FKM rubber exceeds 10 years. A mid-quality calf leather strap, exposed to daily humidity and perspiration, lasts 2–3 years. Leather is a living material that ages: with regular conditioning (neutral creams), longevity extends. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and salt water.
