It was 1913. Mario Prada, from his shop in Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, patented a hot stamping process capable of imprinting a cross-hatch pattern on leather that would become synonymous with Italian luxury worldwide. He called it Saffiano. More than a century later, that Milanese technique is still here – on your wrist.

Look at the surface under the light. The cross-hatch lines catch and reflect the rays differently at every angle: it's not a decorative effect, it's the structure of the leather itself at work. That texture is not just aesthetic – it's also why Saffiano resists scratches and daily wear better than any smooth leather.

The black is deep, uniform, definitive. It doesn't fade, doesn't patina, doesn't yield to time. The ecru stitching runs through it with sartorial precision: a deliberately visible contrast, designed to break the severity and restore character. Not a secondary detail – the detail that makes the difference.

It works with formal dress watches like Patek Calatrava, Vacheron Constantin or JLC Master. It works with refined sports watches like Rolex Submariner, Omega Seamaster, Tudor Black Bay. Yes, the black with ecru stitching works well both on sporty models like the Submariner or Black Bay and on more formal dress watches. The 20x18mm cut is the one I use most often for these models.

No, it develops a patina from dust, sweat, and everyday wear. This is normal and part of the strap's character. The black leather, on the other hand, stays dark and even.

How do I choose the right buckle?

I have steel, black PVD, yellow gold-plated, and rose gold-plated. For a gold watch case, I'd match the buckle in gold; for steel, I'd go with steel or black PVD depending on the contrast you're looking for.

Does Saffiano scratch easily?

Less than a smooth leather. The cross-hatch pattern is part of the leather's structure, not a surface treatment, and it holds up well to daily wear. It's a firm leather, not soft to the touch: it's designed to last that way.
