The Baume & Mercier Hampton 8808 features a lug width of precisely 18 millimetres. This width was engineered by the manufacturer to maintain the architectural proportions of the rectangular case. Measurement is taken from inside to inside of the horizontal lugs, using a digital caliper or flexible ruler.

The choice depends on intended usage. For formal and evening occasions, genuine alligator with natural grain is the classical choice, as the regular scale texture dialogues perfectly with the case's rectangular geometry. For elegant daily wear, vegetable-tanned calf offers natural aging and compelling patina development. For those seeking summer versatility, silicone rubber is practical and durable. Shell cordovan remains the choice for collectors who appreciate rarity and intrinsic lustre.

The strap is changed using specialist tools: a spring bar tool (extractor for the anchor pins). Insert the tool into the small holes located on either side of the horizontal lug, gently compressing the internal spring, then extract the strap outward. Repeat on the opposite side. To mount the new strap, compress the spring again by inserting the new strap into the lugs until the pin locks. We advise against attempting this without experience: the risk of scratching the case is substantial.
