Set of two spring bars for Rolex Submariner reference 16800, in hardened Swiss Standard steel. Size: 20mm between the lugs. Pin 2.0mm. Drilled lugs. The 16800 is the Submariner Date produced from 1979 to 1988 — the transition from the 1680 to the 168000/16610, with sapphire crystal and calibre 3035.
The 16800 is the first step toward the modern Submariner. New sapphire crystal, unidirectional bezel identical to the 1680, but the heart is the more precise calibre 3035. The lugs remain drilled throughout production, and the 2.0mm pin is the Rolex specification consistent with the vintage family. The 16800 is a watch underestimated for years, now finally recognised as a small masterpiece of the period.

Are these spring bars compatible only with the 16800 or can I use them on other vintage Submariner models?
Technically yes, the 20mm with 2.0mm pin is the standard Rolex specification for the entire vintage Submariner lineup up to the 16610. However, it depends on your lugs: if they are drilled like those on the 16800, they work perfectly. If you have a 1680 with soldered lugs, the situation changes slightly — the 2.0mm pin is compatible, but the bar diameter may vary by a few tenths of a millimeter. Test before forcing.
Is the 2.0mm pin compatible with modern aftermarket straps?
It depends on the strap. Many modern designs use 2.4mm or even 2.5mm for added rigidity. With a classic Rolex 2.0mm pin, you will have slight play in the strap’s bar hole — not dangerous, but not ideal aesthetically. If the strap is vintage or vintage-style faithful, it’s perfect. If it’s modern, consult the maker’s specifications.
How do I correctly install these spring bars without damaging the sapphire crystal on the 16800?
The 16800’s sapphire is robust, but the risk lies in the drilled lugs: the pin must enter perpendicular, not at an angle. Use a flat, thin tool (a proper spring bar tool), press straight toward the center of the case, without twisting. If you feel resistance, stop — the hole is not perfectly aligned and forcing will scratch the case, not the crystal.
Are these truly hardened or just standard steel?
These are hardened Swiss Standard stainless steel — meaning hardness consistent with the original Rolex specification, resistant to salt water corrosion, and does not lose elasticity over time. It’s not tungsten, but for a 16800 it is exactly what you need. A substandard spring bar will bend after years; these will not.
