Set of two spring bars for Rolex Day-Date 36 in yellow gold, in hardened Swiss Standard steel. Size: 20mm between the lugs. Pin diameter: 1.8mm. Compatible with all Day-Date 36mm in gold: 1803, 18038, 18238, 118238. Fifty years of President in gold share the same mounting specification.
The 1.8mm on the 20mm Day-Date is the original Rolex specification that runs across the three generations: vintage 1803 with drilled lugs, transitional 18238 with blind lugs, modern 118238 with Maxi case. Even though the case is gold, the pin remains hardened steel — gold deforms under the load of a President bracelet.

Can I use these spring bars on a white gold or platinum Day-Date 36, or only on yellow gold?
Technically yes, the 1.8mm hardened steel pin works on any Day-Date 36 regardless of case colour. Steel has the same hardness whether you install it on yellow gold, white gold, or platinum. The only consideration is aesthetic: if you want visual consistency, some prefer gold-coloured pins, but structurally nothing changes.
Does the difference between drilled lugs (1803) and solid lugs (18238, 118238) affect spring bar compatibility?
No, the spring bar geometry remains identical: 20mm length and 1.8mm pins. What changes is only how it enters the case, but the bar itself doesn’t ‘know’ the difference. It works on all three generations because Rolex maintained this specification for fifty years.
Why does the pin remain hardened steel instead of gold like the case? Isn’t the difference noticeable?
Gold is too soft to withstand the dynamic load of a President bracelet, which weighs significantly. Hardened steel maintains the tension needed to keep the bracelet in position without deforming. Yes, you see steel inside the seat, but it is pure engineering: Rolex has always done it this way.
If I install these spring bars myself, do I risk scratching or damaging them during assembly?
Hardened steel is resistant; the real risk is scratching the case if you use improper tools. I recommend a spring bar tool with nylon tips—avoid direct metal leverage on the case. If the case is gold, it takes very little to leave marks. Better to rely on a watchmaker if you lack experience.
