Tannage — Concia
Tannage, or tanning, is the process of transforming raw hide into stable, durable, and water-repellent leather. The two main methods are vegetable tanning — using natural tannins extracted from bark, leaves, and roots, with long processing times of 30-60 days and low environmental impact — and chrome tanning, which is faster (24-48 hours) but has greater environmental impact. At Milano Straps, I work predominantly with Italian vegetable tanned leather: the leather matures over time, develops a beautiful patina, and is distinguished by its warm hand-feel and characteristic aroma.
