Technical glossary

How the lever works

There's a small lever on the bar: push it with your fingertip, the bar shortens by a millimeter and a half, exits the lug. Insert the new strap, release, the internal spring locks everything back. No fork tool, no lug scratches, no awkward angles on tight-cased watches. It works because the system replaces the tool's lateral force with controlled thumb movement.

1.5mm dress, 1.8mm sport — why two thicknesses

The 1.5mm pin is the traditional dress size: works with thin vegetal leather, vintage alligator, Cordovan, calf up to 3.5mm thick. The 1.8mm pin is the sport size: holds thick leather, rubber, FKM, nylon straps. Putting a heavy sport strap on a 1.5mm bar bends it in two months. Putting a dress strap on a 1.8mm bar makes the bar rotate inside the lug. Always choose thickness based on strap weight, not on watch.

When NOT to use quick release

On Rolex sports with standard blind lugs (1.5/1.8 dedicated pin), on vintage with drilled lugs (still require spring bar tool), and on Panerai with screw bars. In those cases factory spec wins, quick release would be a downgrade. Quick release is the right choice when you change strap often and the watch has no proprietary geometry that rejects it.

Frequent questions

Does quick release system scratch lugs?

No, actually less invasive than traditional fork tool. The fork rests on lug edges to push the bar sideways — scratches possible if it slips. Quick release works internally: the lever activates with fingertip, no metal scraping on lugs. But: pull old strap before moving the bar, or the lever can snag.

Can quick release be used on sport Rolex?

Physically yes, technically you lose a feature. Sport Rolex (Sub, GMT, modern Daytona) is engineered for fixed 1.8mm straight spring bar. Quick release means accepting slightly different pin (system takes 0.5mm extra length). It works, but it is a downgrade vs Rolex factory spec.

1.5mm under thick strap: what is the risk?

Bar progressively bends under strap torsion. First 2-3 months you do not notice; by month 6 strap starts rotating in lug because bar is not straight anymore. By month 12 you can have complete strap detachment under stress. Rule: strap thickness above 3.5mm requires 1.8mm pin.
