MILANO STRAPS · NILE MONITOR LIZARD

Nile Monitor: the finest scale in exotic pets

The Nile monitor has scales so small and dense that they almost look like fabric. It's not an illusion: it has the finest texture among usable reptile leathers, feeling more like silk than exotic leather to the touch.

The Nile monitor has very dense, almost microscopic scales. To the touch, the surface is similar to textile—unexpected for a reptile. With use, it develops a silky sheen that no other exotic skin can reproduce.

CITES certified, processed with vegetable tanning. Cutting requires millimeter precision—small scales do not forgive errors. Available in 18, 20, and 22mm. Ideal for dress watches and ultra-thin complications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is it so prized?

For the fineness and regularity of its round scales, which require careful hide selection and great craftsmanship in processing.

Is it suitable for large watches?

Its fine grain makes it ideal for watches of modest size or ultra-thin designs, where it doesn't 'overwhelm' the dial.

How do you clean a varano strap without damaging the scales?

Nile varano scales are microscopic: they collect residue easily. Dry microfiber cloth, movements along the direction of the scales. Every 2-3 months, a drop of reptile cream on a soft applicator. No direct water. The sheen is preserved — and with use tends to intensify on its own.

Is it possible to order a custom Nile varano strap at the atelier?

Nile varano is worked by appointment at Casati Milano atelier, Via XX Settembre 15. You select the leather together, measure it on your watch. Nothing decided remotely. To book, write us on WhatsApp or request an appointment directly from the website.

What is Nile varano and why does it have finer scales than other lizards?

Nile varano — *Varanus niloticus* — has small, very dense, almost microscopic scales compared to other reptiles. The surface feels almost textile to the touch. Vegetable tanned. Available in 18, 20 and 22mm.

Why do Nile varano scales require reduced gauge saddlery needles?

Nile varano scales are very dense, almost microscopic. A thick needle breaks the structure instead of passing through it. Millimeter precision is mandatory — small scales don't forgive mistakes. Available from 18 to 22mm.

Is Nile varano protected by the CITES convention?

Yes. Nile varano falls under the CITES Convention, which regulates its international trade. Every leather I work with is certified — controlled African origin, complete documentation. Straps are available in 18, 20 and 22mm.

What sizes is the Nile varano strap available in?

The Nile varano strap is available in 3 sizes: 18, 20 and 22mm. To find out your watch's size, write me directly.
