The Seiko Prospex SRPC49 features a 22mm lug width. This dimension was deliberately chosen to maintain optimal proportions with the 45mm case and to deliver both visual and tactile solidity. All 22mm straps are compatible with this model, from leather variants to rubber or NATO textile options.

The choice depends on usage and aesthetic preferences. For regular diving, an FKM rubber strap ensures chemical resistance and rapid drying. For everyday elegance, a vegetable-tanned Tuscan leather strap offers natural patina and colour warmth. For versatility, NATO in marine tones is unbeatable. For formal occasions, black or dark brown alligator elevates the timepiece towards black-tie events.

The Prospex SRPC49 uses standard 22mm spring bars. Obtain a spring bar tool. Insert the tool under the spring bar on one side, push gently downward to release the pin, then withdraw the old strap. Reverse the process to install the new strap, ensuring the springs are properly positioned and the pins enter the lug holes evenly.

It depends on the quality of the aftermarket strap. High-grade vegetable-tanned leather straps often exceed the durability of originals, thanks to slower tanning processes and more robust finishing. FKM rubber straps maintain resilience comparable to Seiko's. NATO in ballistic nylon guarantees exceptional longevity. The key is selecting specialised manufacturers and certified materials.

A well-maintained vegetable-tanned leather strap lasts 3–5 years with daily wear, before requiring replacement due to buckle wear or leather thinning. Exposure to saltwater accelerates deterioration; rinsing in fresh water and drying thoroughly extends service life. The patina forming over time adds character but does not compromise structure. Some collectors maintain leather straps beyond 7–8 years, though with reduced elasticity.
