This measurement is specific to the 36mm case and is critical: a strap that is too wide (22mm) will generate friction during strap changes, whilst one that is too narrow (18mm) will cause vibration and looseness. The 20mm lug width is the construction standard for all Datejust 36 models of this generation.

For the two-tone Datejust 36 (rose gold/stainless steel), alligator remains the reference choice—natural grain dialogue with rose gold patina and maintains visual balance with steel. Recommended shades: dark brown, chocolate, cognac. Quality alternatives: shell cordovan in acajou (ages toward coppery tones that synchronise with rose gold) or vegetable-tanned calf (for evolving patina over time). The ideal fastening is a deployante, preferably two-tone to continue the case language.

Strap replacement on a Datejust 36 requires specific tools: a spring bar tool and small tweezers. Procedure: (1) locate the spring bars (elastic pins) at the strap ends; (2) insert the spring bar tool lever into the lateral slot of the spring bar; (3) apply controlled pressure to retract the elastic spring; (4) remove the old strap; (5) align the new strap with the case lugs; (6) reinsert the spring bars until the click-lock engages.
