No. The bracelet is integrated directly into the case: there are no standard lugs to attach an off-the-shelf strap. The attachment is proprietary and every millimetre is designed in continuity with the case itself. In the atelier I build the strap to measure, working directly on the watch.

Everything goes through <a href="/pages/casati-booking">Casati Milano</a>, by appointment, at Via XX Settembre 15 in Milan. I bring the watch to the bench and take measurements directly from the case: curves, angles, thicknesses. I do not work remotely on this type of piece, because every 5980/1A has its own wear history and deserves a truly tailored approach.

For a watch that is born sporty but also lives in formal settings, my choice goes to Tuscan vegetable-tanned leather. It has character, wears well with both a shirt and a blazer, and over time develops a patina that tells the story of use. If the intention is ceremonial, I move to Mississippi Alligator: the texture works well with the satin and polished surfaces of the steel.

With minimal care — keeping it away from prolonged water exposure and conditioning the leather every few months — a strap built to correct measurements easily lasts six, eight, even ten years. Quality leather does not deteriorate: it ages. It changes colour, softens, becomes more personal. That is the whole point.

Gérald Genta's design has remained recognisable, but the chronograph adds a mechanical complexity that changes the character of the watch on the wrist. It is not simply one more complication: the case houses a more articulated movement and the dial reorganises itself around the counters. I have seen a fair number of examples on the bench — the weight and presence are noticeably different from the three-hander.
