The lug width of the Oris Classic 28.5mm is 14mm. This is an atypical lug width, positioned between traditional women's standards (12–13mm) and men's standards (18–20mm). This dimension reflects the aesthetic proportion of the 28.50mm case diameter. To verify compatibility with a new strap, measure precisely the distance between the inner edges of the lug pins: the value must be exactly 14mm.

The ideal strap depends on use. For formal settings, we recommend alligator or vegetable-tanned calf leather, which ensure elegance and evolving patina over time. For sport-casual use, a structured rubber strap provides moisture resistance and comfort. Nylon NATO, finally, is perfect for those who wish to alternate configurations frequently. Chromatically, dark brown, deep black and navy blue create harmonious contrasts with the satin-finished steel case.

Position the watch on a soft surface (microfibre cloth). Using a spring bar removal tool or professional peen remover, insert the bifurcated tip under the lug pin from the inside. Apply gentle, constant outward pressure, lifting the pin without forcing. Once extracted, the pin will come out easily. To install the new strap, align the holes and reinsert the pin with the same reversed motion. Avoid brute force: a correctly sized pin enters with light, controlled pressure.

A calf strap with vegetable tanning, worn daily under normal conditions, maintains structural integrity for 3–5 years before requiring serious maintenance. Alligator, being denser, can last 5–7 years. Shell cordovan, due to its natural density, reaches even 8–10 years. Wear accelerates with exposure to sweat, salt water and extreme thermal variations. A well-maintained strap (dried quickly after wetting, stored in a temperature-controlled environment) retains functionality and aesthetics beyond these timeframes. Buckle or facing failure usually occurs before the leather itself deteriorates.
