The Big Crown 01 754 7741 3187-Set, seen from the bench

The Oris Big Crown Pointer Date 40 Bronze model features the Oris caliber 754 movement with hours, minutes, seconds and date indication. The 40mm case combines bronze and stainless steel, with the bronze developing a natural patina over time while steel remains stable. The sapphire crystal includes internal anti-reflective treatment. The lug width is 20mm, allowing access to a wide range of compatible straps. This tool watch maintains balanced proportions and excellent legibility without visual dominance.

Frequently asked questions

What is the lug width of the Oris Big Crown 01 754 7741 3187-Set?

The lug width is 20 millimetres. This measurement is the distance between the two lugs (the protruding steel parts on the case) and determines which strap is compatible. To verify, place a ruler perpendicular to the centres of both lugs: they should measure exactly 20mm apart. Any strap with this lug width will fit without forcing.

What is the best strap for this Oris model?

There is no single answer—it depends on intended use and aesthetic preference. For formal elegance, we recommend alligator leather in dark tones (black, chocolate brown), which balances the case mass without competing visually. For progressive ageing, vegetable-tanned calf leather develops patina alongside the bronze case. For instrumental pragmatism, a NATO strap in Cordura grey or navy honours the aviation heritage. FKM rubber is ideal for water-centric environments.

How do I change the strap on the Big Crown 01 754 7741 3187-Set?

You'll need a spring bar remover tool. Position the flat end beneath one of the horizontal metal pins at the lug bases, apply gentle upward pressure until the internal spring retracts. Once retracted, the pin will slide free. Repeat on the other side. To install the new strap, align the strap holes with the two pins and press firmly with the remover until the spring re-engages. Never force: if the spring is properly retracted, insertion is natural.

Can I use an aftermarket compatible strap with this watch?

Yes, absolutely. Any strap with a 20mm lug width is physically compatible. Quality varies considerably, however. For the Big Crown, we recommend aftermarket straps constructed in vegetable-tanned leather or genuine alligator—materials that age as nobly as the bronze case. Avoid cheap synthetic leather straps, which will deteriorate within months.

How long does a leather strap last on this watch?

A quality leather strap on a Big Crown typically lasts 3–5 years under normal daily wear. Vegetable-tanned leather tends to outlast other finishes because the hide is denser and develops natural water-resistance through oxidation. Genuine alligator, if well-constructed, can reach 5–6 years. Longevity depends on direct sun exposure, contact with water (the Big Crown is water-resistant; the strap is not) and ambient humidity. Pre-emptive conditioning with vegetable wax or oil can extend strap life by 1–2 years.
