Set of two spring bars for Rolex Datejust 31 in steel with blind lugs, in tempered Swiss Standard steel. Size: 17mm between the lugs. Pin 1.8mm. Compatible with the Datejust 31 steel produced from the early 2000s onwards — modern version with sealed case, strap removal only from the side.
The 17mm × 1.8mm blind on the modern steel Datejust 31 is the specification of the contemporary line. More refined case, improved finishing, blind lugs for aesthetics and Rolex production standardisation. The pin remains 1.8mm — the Datejust specification, midway between the 1.5mm sport and the 2.0mm vintage. When a client brings in a blind steel DJ 31 for a strap, these are the spring bars.

Am I sure that 17mm × 1.8mm fit my Datejust 31? How can I verify before ordering?
If your Datejust 31 is stainless steel and manufactured from 2000 onwards, these will fit. The safest way: inspect the case lugs — if they are solid (no visible through-hole), you’re good. If you see a hole where the bar passes through the lugs, then you have open lugs and these are not compatible. If in doubt, measure the inner distance between lugs: it must be exactly 17mm.
If I change straps often, do spring bars wear out? How long do they last?
Hardened Swiss Standard steel holds up well if you avoid rough removal. Each time you take them out, you risk micro-bending; repeated hundreds of times, they lose elasticity. In practice: with reasonable strap changes (once a month), they last for years. If you bend them during installation, the end comes sooner — better to use a spring bar tool instead of a knife.
Why 1.8mm and not 1.5mm or 2.0mm? Is there a practical difference?
The 1.8mm is Rolex’s compromise for the modern Datejust 31 — robust enough for the stainless steel case, not as invasive as vintage 2.0mm. At 1.5mm they would be too flexible for a case of this mass; at 2.0mm they would not fit in the solid lugs of this model. It is the most stable technical choice for this reference.
If I don’t install them properly, what’s the risk? Will the strap slip off my wrist?
If the bar is not properly seated, the strap will not hold and will slip off — your watch will fall. You will feel a dry click when it enters correctly into its seat. If it enters loosely or without resistance, remove it and try again: solid lugs do not allow room for mid-installation correction. Take the time to get it right on the first attempt.
