Rolex Screwdriver Kit

The kit I use in my workshop to resize Rolex Oyster and Jubilee bracelets. Three dedicated screwdrivers with tips calibrated exactly to bracelet screws — not a generic watchmaker's kit. Each tip is designed to engage without slipping, without marking gold or steel.

What's Inside

  • 3 precision screwdrivers:
    • Oyster (all sport and classic models)
    • Jubilee/President men's
    • Jubilee/President ladies'
  • 1 pin tool for clasp adjustment
  • 1 hard plastic instruction card (credit card format)
  • 1 case in natural cork + cotton canvas

Compatible Models

All Rolex bracelets: Submariner, GMT-Master / GMT-Master II, Daytona, Datejust, Day-Date President, Yacht-Master, Explorer, Oyster Perpetual, Sea-Dweller, Air-King, Milgauss, Sky-Dweller. Including 18k gold lines.

Construction

  • Tips: hardened S2 steel (extended durability)
  • Body: chrome-molybdenum steel
  • Handle: ergonomic TPR rubber
  • Joint: ball bearing (smooth rotation)
  • T-tip: designed for Rolex screws

This is not a beginner's kit. If you have never disassembled a Rolex bracelet, practice two or three times on an inexpensive Oyster before touching your Submariner.

Are the tips really calibrated for Rolex screws or are they standard screwdrivers adapted?

The tips are hardened S2 steel with a T-shaped geometry designed specifically for Rolex bracelet screws, which have a proprietary slot head different from standard JIS or Phillips. A generic watchmaker’s screwdriver tends to slip because the tip width does not match the screw seat, risking burrs on the edges. The kit includes three distinct sizes because the screws on the lady Jubilee, men’s Jubilee, and Oyster have different dimensions: it is not possible to use the same tip for all three formats without compromising grip.

Can I use this kit on 18k gold Rolex bracelets without risking scratches on the metal?

18k gold has a Vickers hardness of approximately 120-150 HV, significantly lower than stainless steel on sports bracelets (approximately 200 HV): it is the material at highest risk of scratches during adjustment. The hardened S2 steel tip works exclusively inside the screw seat, with no lateral contact with the links, but application technique remains critical. It is advisable to work with the bracelet resting on a soft surface, apply constant vertical pressure before starting rotation, and never force a screw stuck by rust or sweat — in that case treat it with penetrant before servicing.

How many screws can be removed/reinstalled before the tips wear out?

Hardened S2 steel maintains the tip edge through several hundred cycles under normal conditions, which in practice means years of domestic or collector use. The main wear factor is not the number of operations but technique: applying lateral pressure or rotating without perfect grip wears the tip far more rapidly than correct use. The tips are not interchangeable or hand-sharpened — when you notice the first systematic slippage on screws in good condition, that is the signal that the geometry has degraded and the tip should be replaced.

Does the pin tool for the clasp also work on Oyster deployant clasps, not just standard closures?

The included pin is designed for adjustment of the standard tang clasp holes (the pin-type closure typical of Oyster and Jubilee bracelets). Butterfly deployant clasps — such as those fitted to recent Submariner, GMT, and Daytona models — use a sliding mechanism with hexagonal or star screws, not a press-fit pin: for those you need the Oyster screwdriver from the kit, not the pin tool. Before working on a deployant, verify the fastening type by looking at the inside of the clasp.

Can a novice watchmaker use this kit or is prior experience really necessary?

The instruction sheet in rigid plastic format illustrates the step-by-step procedure, but the tool assumes the user already knows the difference between a threaded screw and a press-fit pin — a common mistake on Jubilee where some links use mixed systems. The real risk for someone who has never disassembled a Rolex bracelet is applying torque to a press-fit pin treating it as a screw, permanently deforming the seat. The advice included in the documentation to practice on an economical Oyster first (for example an aftermarket replacement bracelet) before working on a valuable watch is technically correct and should be taken literally.
