Nylon was a necessity. Leather is a choice.

The British Ministry of Defence designed the NATO strap for one sole purpose: to keep the watch on the wrist even when a spring bar fails. A single piece that passes under the watch case creates a second level of security, ensuring nothing falls off. That principle still works today — we've only changed the material.

Instead of military nylon, we use black Italian calfskin. The one-piece structure remains intact, as does the construction logic. What changes is the feel on the skin: calfskin breathes, gradually softens, and develops a subtle patina that nylon will never have. It doesn't remain identical for years — it evolves, adapts, and becomes yours.

The black version has no visible stitching. This isn't just an aesthetic choice; it's the condition that allows the material to speak for itself, without distractions. On a Speedmaster or a Submariner, this strap adds no unnecessary embellishment. It elevates the NATO from a casual context to something suitable for an office or an informal dinner — without requiring a strap change.

Those familiar with the nylon NATO will immediately recognize the logic. Those who have never worn one will discover that security and elegance, in this format, are not mutually exclusive.

Frequently Asked Questions

With a thickness of just 1mm, does the strap sit under the case without creating visible bulk?

That is precisely the point. At 1mm, the calfskin slides beneath the case without lifting it or producing that bulky profile typical of thicker nylon NATOs. On the wrist you feel the double layer of protection — you don’t see it. On watches with a low case profile such as a Speedmaster or a vintage tool watch, the result is particularly clean.

How long does it take for the leather to soften and conform to the wrist?

Italian calfskin at 1mm already starts with a base softness superior to nylon. During the first weeks the strap yields slightly at the folding points, taking on the shape of the wrist. A light patina begins to appear after a few months of regular wear, more pronounced along the edges and in the contact areas. This is not a flaw — it is the way living leather distinguishes itself from synthetic materials.

Is this leather NATO compatible with standard 20mm lugs or does it require special keepers?

It is compatible with any watch featuring 20mm lugs — no special keepers or adapters are required. The one-piece design follows the original British MoD standard: it threads through the lugs and passes beneath the case like a classic NATO. It works without modification on Submariner, Black Bay, Seamaster, IWC Pilot and all tool watches with standard lug spacing.

How does it concretely differ from a nylon NATO of the same size for daily wear?

The main difference lies in contextual versatility. A nylon NATO handles anything but remains visibly sporty — in a semi-formal setting it stands out. Black calfskin without visible stitching lowers the contextual threshold: the same watch can move from a weekend to a meeting without appearing out of place. On a practical level, leather breathes differently from nylon and requires avoiding prolonged immersion — it is not designed for intensive aquatic use.
