A man walks into our atelier on Via XX Settembre carrying a watch he inherited from his father. The case is steel, brushed by decades of wear. The dial has aged into a tone no catalogue ever named. The strap — a generic replacement bought somewhere along the way — tells nothing. It is the one part of the watch that has no memory.
He does not need a new strap. He needs the right one. And the right one does not exist yet.
This is where a bespoke watch strap begins. Not with a measurement, not with a colour swatch. It begins with an appointment — a conversation at our bench in Milano, where we look at the watch together, study the lugs, the way the case sits against the wrist, the life the piece has lived so far.
Then comes the leather. We keep our hides in the atelier so you can see them, touch them, fold them against the light. Choosing the leather from a screen is like choosing a wine from a label. The grain has to speak to you. The hand — that particular softness or resistance when you press your thumb across the surface — has to feel inevitable. We guide the selection, but the final word is yours.
From that point, the strap passes through more than fifty steps. Cutting, skiving, edge folding, stitching by hand with linen thread drawn through beeswax. Each passage is deliberate. There is no stage where a machine compensates for a shortcut taken earlier. The work moves slowly because slowness is the method, not a delay.
Four weeks from appointment to delivery. Some clients find this long. We find it honest. A strap built in less time is a strap where something was hurried, and what gets hurried eventually shows.
Good leather changes. It does not deteriorate — it responds. The oils from your skin darken the surface unevenly, following the way you actually wear the watch. After six months, the patina maps your habits. After twelve, the strap belongs to no one else. We build to a standard that holds for at least eighteen months of daily wear, though many of our straps outlast that considerably. The structure endures; the surface tells the story.
