Barenia is a counterintuitive choice on sports watches. Its initial stiffness and maintenance requirements make it better suited for dress watches—Datejust 36mm, Seamaster Deville, Patek Aquanaut in classic lug widths (18-19mm). On a Submariner (21mm) it works, but you lose barenia's main advantage: its visible aging on minimal scuffs. If you love salt water and sport, reach for more robust leathers. If your Sub is a milestone piece in the safe and comes out three times a year, then barenia tells that story perfectly.

No, it's not waterproof. It absorbs moisture and sweat, which—listen carefully—is not a flaw, it's a feature. The leather breathes, which is why it ages so well. In summer, protect it: wear the strap on alternate days, dry it after sweat, use light protective creams. Anyone who knows barenia understands it's not "summer-proof" like silicone or TPU: it's a leather for those who consciously manage their relationship with their watch, not for those who forget it on their wrist for three months.

It scratches more easily than chromium-tanned leather, yes. But—and this is central to the barenia philosophy—every scratch is visible and becomes patina. After 2-3 years, the strap has a chromatic depth no "perfect" leather reaches. Maintenance: soft brush every month to remove dust, vegetable-based protective cream (like Hermès) every 3-4 months, protection from stagnant water. If the strap gets wet, air dry it, never apply heat. I personally treat my barenia like a living object: small regular care, awareness that it will age, acceptance that perfection isn't the goal. It's the opposite of disposable logic.

Barenia is sensitive to water and sweat. Every 2-3 months, apply a neutral nourishing cream with a natural base using a soft cloth. Avoid water contact. Don't use polishing products: the amber patina forms on its own, over time. The only care that matters is daily wear.
