Hypoallergenic calfskin: real leather, clean tanning

Hypoallergenic calfskin is not a different type of leather. It is the same animal, processed without chromium, nickel, cobalt, azo dyes, and formaldehyde. Visually and to the touch: indistinguishable from conventional calfskin of equal quality.

The hypoallergenic calf is conventional calfskin processed without heavy metals — no chromium, no nickel, no cobalt. No azo dyes. No residual formaldehyde. The tanning is vegetable. Over time it develops patina. For those with sensitive skin, I always pair it with a lambskin lining.

Available in 18, 20 and 22mm. I have fitted it on Omega Constellation, Longines La Grande Classique, Nomos Club. It works on a dress watch and on something more sporty. The material does not change — only the person who can wear it does.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I get skin reactions with regular leather straps?

In most cases the culprit isn't the leather itself, but chemical residues from tanning. Chrome tanning leaves traces of hexavalent chromium that can irritate sensitive skin. Azo synthetic dyes are another common cause. A hypoallergenic calf strap vegetable-tanned with natural dyes eliminates these sources of irritation.

Is hypoallergenic calf visually different from regular calf?

No, if the leather quality is equivalent. A good hypoallergenic calf vegetable-tanned has the same grain, the same softness, the same color depth as conventional calf of the same level. The difference is in the process chemistry, not the aesthetic result. In fact, vegetable tanning — which characterizes hypoallergenic leather — often produces a more beautiful patina over time.

Do you recommend a specific lining with hypoallergenic calf?

Yes — lamb lining, always. Lamb is naturally soft against wrist skin, doesn't retain moisture, and in the processes I use is also certified hypoallergenic. The combination of hypoallergenic calf + lamb lining is what I recommend to all clients with sensitive skin. It solves the problem in 95% of cases.

How do you clean a hypoallergenic calf strap without damaging the tanning?

Hypoallergenic calf cleans like any vegetable-tanned calf. Lightly dampened cloth, no aggressive detergents. Every 2-3 months, a pass with solvent-free nourishing cream keeps the tanning intact and helps the patina develop over time.

What does it mean that a calf strap is certified hypoallergenic?

It means the tanning process eliminates heavy metals — chromium, nickel, cobalt — and removes azo dyes and formaldehyde. Anyone who develops redness or itching with conventional straps can wear it without reactions. Available from 18 to 22mm lug width.

What exactly is hypoallergenic calf leather?

Hypoallergenic calf is the same animal as conventional calf, processed differently. Vegetable tanning, zero heavy metals, zero azo dyes, zero residual formaldehyde. Available in 18, 20 and 22mm lug width.

Can I order a custom hypoallergenic strap at the atelier?

At Via XX Settembre 15, Milan, you choose the leather together. The watch lug width is measured there, at the atelier table. By appointment only — message us on WhatsApp to book a date.

Does hypoallergenic calf develop patina like conventional calf?

Yes. Hypoallergenic calf develops patina exactly like conventional calf of equivalent quality. Vegetable tanning — which excludes chromium, nickel and cobalt — produces the richest patina I know over time. True across all available sizes: 18, 20 and 22mm lug width.
