Lambskin
Definition
Lambskin is the softest of the leathers I use. Not in the sense of fragile — soft in the sense of immediate: it needs no breaking in, it adapts to the wrist from the first day, it offers no resistance to flexing. It's a material that convinces whoever wears it, not whoever looks at it in a shop window. I use it mainly for two things: linings and slim straps for dress watches. As a lining, lambskin is the most comfortable against the skin — it doesn't scratch, doesn't retain moisture, ages cleanly. As a main strap, I reserve it for elegant watches at 16-18mm where a thin profile is essential. The limit of lambskin is abrasion resistance: it's lower than calfskin or cordovan. It isn't the material for a watch worn daily without care. But for a dress watch worn in rotation, kept away from sweat and water, it lasts years without losing its softness. Vegetable tanning on lambskin produces a leather with a fine grain and a warm tone that improves over time. The suede version — lambskin suede — is even more delicate but has a texture that has no equal for certain formal pairings. For a Vacheron Constantin or a Patek Philippe in white gold, pearl grey lambskin suede at 18mm is a choice that takes courage but pays off.
Frequently asked questions
Is lambskin leather durable enough for everyday use?
It depends on the use. For a dress watch worn in rotation — three or four times a week, never in the shower, kept away from prolonged sweat — lambskin lasts years. For an intensely worn everyday watch, I prefer box calf or cordovan. Lambskin has a softness no other leather has, but it needs to be treated with the respect it deserves.
Can I use lambskin as a lining for my strap?
It's my preferred choice for linings on exotic leather straps. Lambskin is soft against the skin of the wrist, doesn't scratch, doesn't retain moisture the way nylon does. Its reduced thickness allows a slim profile to be maintained even on straps with exotic leather on the outside. For those with sensitive skin, it's the most comfortable lining I know.
Which watches do you pair lambskin leather with?
Lambskin goes well with classic dress watches: Vacheron Constantin Patrimony, Patek Philippe Calatrava, IWC Portofino. On these watches, a black or anthracite grey lambskin strap at 18mm is an elegant, understated choice. I avoid lambskin on sports or diving watches — it isn't its environment, and it deforms if it gets wet.
