Saffiano: pressed calfskin, diamond texture

Saffiano leather is not a different type of calfskin. It is a specific manufacturing process: a press with engraved cylinders imprints a crosshatch, diamond-shaped pattern on the surface. The result is a compact, shiny, almost tactile texture – and more scratch-resistant than any smooth calfskin.

Saffiano is calfskin treated with pressed cylinders that imprint a cross-hatch diamond pattern. It is not a different leather: it is a process that changes the surface. The result is a compact texture, resistant to scratches and water, which does not develop a patina and maintains its color over time.

Available in 18, 20 and 22mm. It pairs well with watches of mixed character — from a Longines La Grande Classique ref. L4.705.4.58.6 to an Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean ref. 232.33.38.20.01.001. For everyday use, it is among the easiest materials to maintain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is saffiano a leather or a treatment?

It's a treatment applied to a leather — typically calf or bovine leather. The press stamps the crosshatch pattern and compacts the surface fibers. The base leather remains what it is — the quality of saffiano depends on the quality of the calf underneath. Saffiano on good-quality European calf is completely different from saffiano on industrial bovine leather, even if they look similar at first glance.

Does saffiano develop a patina like smooth calf?

Less, and differently. The pressed texture slows the patina process — compact fibers react more slowly to use than smooth calf. Over time saffiano acquires a soft sheen in contact areas, but not the depth of patina of a box calf or cordovan. For those wanting patina, saffiano isn't the first choice. For those wanting the leather to look orderly over time, it's ideal.

How do you clean a saffiano strap?

It's the easiest leather I work with to clean. The compact texture doesn't absorb stains like suede or nubuck. A slightly damp microfiber cloth removes most surface deposits. For stubborn stains, a little diluted neutral soap applied gently. Dry immediately with a dry cloth. No creams or oils — the pressed texture doesn't absorb them well.

How do you clean a saffiano leather strap after daily use?

The compact surface of saffiano doesn't absorb stains the way smooth calf would. A damp cloth removes surface deposits. Every 2-3 months, a pass with neutral cream keeps the diamond texture intact.

Is it possible to order a custom saffiano strap at the Casati atelier?

Casati Milano, at Via XX Settembre 15, is where you choose saffiano in person — the leather, the size, the dialogue with the watch it will pair with. Book an appointment via WhatsApp or through the form on the website.

Why does the diamond texture of saffiano make it more scratch-resistant?

The press incises the leather fibers while compacting them into a geometric lattice. Pressed fibers don't separate under friction. On smooth calf, a scratch splits the surface fibers. On saffiano, the crosshatch structure holds them tight. Available from 18 to 22mm.

Is saffiano a different leather from calf or just a treatment?

Saffiano is a treatment, not a different leather. Base: calf, chrome-tanned. After tanning, the leather is pressed with engraved cylinders that stamp the crosshatch diamond pattern. The result changes the texture and practical properties. Available in 18, 20 and 22mm.

Does saffiano resist water better than smooth leather?

Yes, compared to smooth leather. The crosshatch texture reduces moisture absorption — pressed fibers don't open on contact with water the way untreated calf does. In case of rain or sweat, a dry cloth is enough. I make it in 18, 20 and 22mm.
