THE ORIGIN

Chrome tanning: why Saffiano lasts where smooth calfskin doesn't

Saffiano is not a leather in itself. It is calfskin - or cowhide - that is passed under engraved cylinders after tanning. Those cylinders imprint the cross-hatched diamond pattern that you recognize at first sight. The tanning is chrome-based. The result is a compact surface, with a natural glossy finish and an almost tactile texture under the fingers.

The cross-hatched geometry is not just aesthetic. The pressed fibers do not open up like those of smooth calfskin, so saffiano resists scratches better than almost all smooth leathers. It resists water. It does not absorb stains - a damp cloth removes superficial deposits without leaving a trace. The texture remains stable over time: after 2 years of daily use, it maintains a tidier appearance than traditional calfskin. The only thing it doesn't do is develop patina. The color remains that of the first day.

How do you clean a saffiano strap?

It's the easiest leather I work with to clean. The compact texture doesn't absorb stains like suede or nubuck. A slightly damp microfiber cloth removes most surface deposits. For stubborn stains, a little diluted neutral soap applied gently. Dry immediately with a dry cloth. No creams or oils — the pressed texture doesn't absorb them well.

How do you clean a saffiano leather strap after daily use?
