18 mm straps: the lug width for Omega, Longines, IWC and others

You own an Omega, a Longines, or perhaps a Nomos with 18 mm lugs on your wrist. Before choosing your next strap, look at the lugs: their width determines how the leather bends, how it sits under the case, how long the fold lasts before it cracks. Eighteen millimeters is a precise measurement—not close, not 'roughly'. We have 4243 models in our archive that carry it, from Omega to Breguet.

Why 18 mm is not a measurement like any other

Eighteen millimeters is a transitional width. It sits below 20 mm, which accounts for 38.8% of all watches in our archive—the most common by far—and above 16 mm, which holds at 7.4%. On an 18 mm lug, the strap works closer to the center of the case: the curve between lug and wrist is tighter, and the leather must follow it without creating visible creases in the first millimeters next to the buckle.

Alligator, with its regular pattern of scales, follows this curve better than stiffer leathers: it bends where needed without crinkling elsewhere, and with wear the crease sets at one precise point, it does not shift. On thinner movements—certain Nomos Glashütte, some vintage Longines—the 18 mm lug leaves the strap almost flush with the case; on bulkier chronographs like certain Breitling models, the same width creates an intentional contrast between wide lug and narrower strap.

Among the brands we reference—Omega, Breitling, Longines, IWC, Nomos Glashütte, Vacheron Constantin, Glashütte Original, Breguet—the width remains 18 mm, but the lug shape changes: straight, curved, faceted. The strap must adapt to that shape before it adapts to the wrist.

Frequently asked questions

Which watch brands fit an 18mm lug width?

Omega, Breitling, Longines, IWC, Nomos Glashütte, Vacheron Constantin, Glashütte Original and Breguet are among the brands that often use this lug width. In our watch archive, almost all models from these brands have an 18mm lug width. For your specific model, it's still worth checking, as sizes can vary even within the same brand.

How can I find out if my watch has an 18mm lug width?

The safest way is to look up your model in Milano Straps' watch archive, also via the "Find your watch's size" box featured on every product page. Alternatively, send a photo of your watch to the atelier on WhatsApp using the "Verify on WhatsApp" button, or photograph it on app.milanostraps.it, which recognises the size. Only as a last resort, measure the distance between the two lugs with a ruler or callipers: never a ruler alone.

Where can I find 18 mm alligator straps?

On this page you will find ready-made 18 mm alligator straps, nine pieces in the catalogue. They can be chosen and taken home directly online, with no need for an appointment. Each piece has its price shown on its page, along with details on the leather and stitching.

How many alligator strap models are there in this 18 mm collection?

In this collection you will find nine alligator straps, all worked with vegetable tanning and saddle stitching. These are ready-made pieces, which can be browsed and chosen directly from the page. The 18 mm size offered here covers almost all models from brands such as Omega, Longines and IWC.

Can I order an 18 mm strap made to measure?

Made to measure is not offered by Milano Straps but by Casati Milano, made only by appointment in the atelier at Via XX Settembre 15 in Milan. Milano Straps instead offers ready-made straps, already in the catalogue, with verified lug width and price shown online. For made to measure, you can visit casatimilano.com.
