The Zenith El Primero 03.2040.400/26.C802 has a lug width of 21mm. This specification is unique to this model and does not correspond to the more common 18mm or 20mm standards. The measurement must be taken from the internal wall of one lug to the other, at the point where the strap enters the slot. A digital calliper is the recommended tool for accuracy within 0.5mm.

For this squared and refined chronograph, we recommend straps in Mississippi alligator (fine grain) or European calf in vegetable tanning. Alligator emphasises the geometric architecture of the case, whilst calf acquires historical patina over time. For sports use, Japanese shell cordovan provides rigidity and constructive density. A NATO strap in dark grey Cordura canvas is an interesting alternative that dialogues with the black dial without technical compromise.

The procedure is identical to any watch with standard lugs. Obtain a spring bar tool, position the tip in the lug hole, press gently to depress the internal spring, and remove the previous pin. Prepare the new 21mm strap, align the holes, reinsert the pin and allow the spring to lock naturally in the opposite hole. Verify that the strap is firmly attached. Always use quality marine-grade tools to avoid damage to the satinized case finish.

All straps with a 21mm lug width are compatible. You will find 21mm straps in leather, rubber, canvas and metal mesh on the market. We recommend always checking the positioning of the keepers: some manufacturers produce 21mm straps with asymmetrical or poorly positioned keepers. Artisanal quality straps guarantee parallel and centred keepers, essential for the visual aesthetics of a chronograph of this architectural class.

Durability depends on tanning and use. A calf in vegetable tanning resists 3-4 years with daily wear, with patina deepening over time. Alligator, being denser, can exceed 5-6 years. Shell cordovan, given its constructive thickness, reaches 6-8 years. Exposure to water, sweat and UV rays accelerates ageing. An FKM rubber strap resists 4-5 years before hardening. We recommend rotating between multiple straps and annual maintenance with specific creams to extend life.
