This unconventional measurement, larger than the standard 20-22mm found on most sports chronographs, was calibrated by Zenith to achieve optimal proportions with the 44mm case. To verify strap compatibility, measure the internal distance between the two lugs on the case.

For the Defy 10.9001.9004/99.R941, we recommend black or anthracite grey alligator leather, which dialogues perfectly with the carbon fibre case, whilst the fine grain texture emphasises the technical aesthetic. Vegetable-tanned calf leather in deep tones (bourbon, dark brown) represents a sophisticated alternative that develops a rich patina over time. Black or anthracite grey rubber straps maintain the sports-oriented character of the El Primero movement.

Remove the original strap using a dedicated spring bar tool. Position the lever beneath the lug to compress the internal spring, then gently extract the spring bar from the old strap. Repeat on the opposite side. Insert the ends of the new strap into the lugs, ensuring the lug holder slides smoothly within the 23mm width without excessive play. Verify that the strap is perfectly aligned before wearing the watch.

We do not recommend forcing a 22mm strap onto the 23mm lug width. Although one millimetre appears minimal, it would create excessive play that damages both the strap and the lugs, compromising visual alignment and mechanical integrity. Dimensional precision is essential for watch integrity. Always use straps specifically designed for 23mm.

A natural leather strap—alligator, vegetable-tanned calf, or shell cordovan—maintains optimal functionality for 3-5 years of regular daily wear, with variations depending on sun exposure, humidity, and frequency of use. Wear on the lug holes and natural leather shrinkage indicate when replacement is necessary. Many owners maintain multiple artisanal straps to extend the watch's versatility.
